Designed by the renowned Argentine architect César Pelli, this elevated and circular piazza measures 100 meters in diameter and stands 6 meters above the surrounding streets. It serves as the centerpiece of the Porta Nuova redevelopment project, which aims to reconnect the Isola neighborhood with the city center and transform the area into a vibrant urban hub.

The piazza is surrounded by impressive modern architecture, including the UniCredit Tower, Italy's tallest skyscraper, and the Bosco Verticale, a pair of residential towers adorned with over 9,000 trees. At the center of the square lies a large reflecting pool, which features three fountains equipped with water, light, and music elements, creating an engaging atmosphere for visitors. The square is also home to the IBM Studios, a multifunctional space that hosts various events and exhibitions.

Bosco Verticale: Milan's Vertical Forest

Bosco Verticale, or 'Vertical Forest,' is an innovative residential complex located in Milan's Porta Nuova district. Designed by Boeri Studio, led by architect Stefano Boeri, the project consists of two towers: Torre E, standing at 110 meters with 24 floors, and Torre D, reaching 76 meters with 17 floors. Completed in 2014, the towers are adorned with over 2,000 trees, 4,500 shrubs, and 20,000 plants from 100 different species, creating a dense vertical forest that contributes to urban biodiversity and environmental sustainability.

The design of Bosco Verticale aims to integrate nature into the urban fabric, reducing urban sprawl and enhancing the quality of life for its residents. The towers' facades are equipped with staggered balconies that accommodate large tubs for vegetation, allowing trees to grow up to nine meters high. This green coverage not only provides aesthetic value but also offers significant environmental benefits, including air purification, noise reduction, and mitigation of the urban heat island effect. The project has received international acclaim, including the 2014 International Highrise Award and recognition as one of the '50 Most Iconic Skyscrapers in the World' by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
